Sebastián Buitrón (Mexico City, 1993) is a filmmaker and artist. He graduated from the Escuela Superior de Cine (2017–2020) with honors. Sebastián is a multidisciplinary cinematic artist whose most personal approach to his work lies in experimental-documentary hybrids that explore formal craftsmanship while addressing psychocultural, ethnosociopolitical, and pre-Hispanic issues in Mexico.
Since 2017, he has been developing projects such as Nudo de Jornada, a medium-length film that premiered with a special jury mention (Nelson Carro, Sonia Riquer) at the former Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival (5th edition, 2021). The film was also screened at Cine Baldío (Habitar de otra forma) by Artes Monterrey 2021 and was part of the Film Market at Visions du Réel 52nd edition, 2021.
Sebastián works as an editor, writer, director, cinematographer, sound designer, producer, musician, and actor. In 2022, he played the lead role in Amsterdam, produced by HBO and directed by Gustavo Taretto.
Currently, Sebastián is self-distributing his latest short film, his ESCINE thesis Cerros, shot in 16mm, which was part of the Film Market at Visions du Réel 56th edition, 2025. He is also researching and writing the screenplay for his debut feature, planned for production in 2026/2027.
Additionally, he collaborated for 18 months on sound editing and color correction for the fixed photography of Carnal, the solo exhibition by visual artist Simón Gerbaud at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in March 2025.
