Community Project

Ancona developeda clay lattice with pre-Hispanic motifs, which was installed as a mural at Bachillerato 5/7 Emiliano Zapata in the community of Río Grande. Taking advantage of the local tradition of making tiles and bricks, Ancona proposes new architectural and creative possibilities through Señores Jaguar, Trueno, and Maíz (Mr. Jaguar, Thunder, and Corn). Their proposal explores alternative construction and ornamental forms. Inspired by the Río Grande stela, housed in the National Museum of Anthropology and History, Ancona’s work aims to reclaim a visual influence from a historical past related to the region, using its iconography and symbolism.

Log-Piece

México

(Quintana Roo, MX – 1981)
Visual artist who works with sculpture and ceramics, weaving through the historiography of dyes, pigments, natural materials, and Mesoamerican places. His work is the result of a research-based practice that questions the intangible displacements of forgotten traditions, heritage and identities. Using speculative techniques as an artistic methodology, his work seeks a potential for knowledge in the analysis and identification of mineral and ethnic biocultural environments. Recent projects have had a particular interest in the archaeological contexts and technological evidence of a synthetic organo-mineral (clay) pigment known as Maya Blue, an investigation understood as part of an extended narrative in which artistic gesture can shape possible representations and stories that reintroduce forgotten materialities that would otherwise be lost to history.
