Community Project

Las mujeres de colores de la costa – Comunidad de Cerro Hermoso
As a woman, feminist and freedom believer, Santibañez chose to record a group of wonderful women who have a Jamaica flower field and make delicious products: liquor, wine, jam, and tea. To support their business’s growth, it is important that they reach a wider clientele outside of Puerto Escondido and worldwide. It is necessary to teach the world that this large number of Mexican women – single women, farmers, with very low incomes, often with children – have will and power, operating their own business, and being proud of it.

Lives and works in New York City and in the Berkshires

With a background in science, Katia Santibañez often looks to nature for inspiration, recently even using a microscope to examine nature’s most basic elements. As an artist, Katia Santibañez believes in experimenting, exploring and using as many tools as possible in her work. She turned to the camera to explore new subjects that couldn’t be fully expressed through painting or drawing. The camera allows her to capture specific moments in time and to expand her work in new directions, such as video that incorporates voice and music. Through the continued use of new media and methods, Santibañez creates relationships with worlds that grow and deepen with each work.
Katia Santibañez was born in Paris, France in 1964. She was trained in Microbiology and Biochemistry before getting her degree in 1990 at the Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. She then moved to New York and has exhibited widely there since 1998. Solo exhibitions include Jancar Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), IMC Lab (New York, NY), and group shows at Pace Prints (New York, NY), and Jeff Bailey Gallery (New York, NY). She has been a resident at The Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT, Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York, and at Sitka Center on the Oregon coast. Her paintings, drawings, and prints are in numerous public and private collections, including The Morgan Library. Santibañez lives and works in New York City and in the Berkshires.
