Community Project

Mural arqueológico – COBAO Número 25 de Río Grande
The project’s objective was to sensitize attendees about the historical and cultural value of the pre-Hispanic pieces found in their community and throughout the Mexican territory.
Taking borrowed pieces from the collection of pre-Columbian figures that they have at COBAO, the participants were invited to do an exercise using their imagination. They made imaginary drawings that depicted how the figures would look if they were not broken or in fragments while discussing the importance of keeping the pre-Hispanic cultures that lived in the coastal area. As well as why it is indispensable to maintain and preserve the pieces for their historical and cultural value. From the drawings created in the workshop, cardboard stencils were made with which several large-format paintings were made using techniques such as graffiti or gravity painting, making each piece a group work.

“Arguably one of the hallmarks of any art of significance is its capacity to change the way we look at things. Gibbons’ work constitutes a distinctive exploration of areas of experience which we sometimes overlook or take for granted because of their containment within the precincts of the familiar. His sculpture draws the spaces we occupy into poetic alignment with the body we inhabit, underlining and illuminating some fundamental aspects of life. In so doing it returns us to our surroundings with a heightened awareness of ourselves and our relation to the world.”
-Paul Moorhouse
“Gibbons’ work has an immense physical presence which exists regardless of size whether painted or polished, rusted, scraped or simply left alone, every inch of surface has been analysed, affirmed and consequently activated.”
-Tim Marlow
He exhibits both internationally and nationally and lives and works in London.
