Community Project

It is a series of diverse activities aimed at working collectively for 9 sessions, the result of this process was contained in a work that catalyzes the preservation of the collective memory of different generations. 65 children aged between 6-11 years old participated, from first to the sixth year, at Miguel Hidalgo Elementary School, in the town of Agua Zarca. In this community, nature constitutes the center of life and provides the raw materials that make the complex social community subsist. The children discussed and contemplated their surroundings, representing it in drawings, sculptures, and texts in Spanish and Chatino.

Gabriela Galván was born in Mexico City. Her works create formal meditations grounded in found and everyday objects, which she uses to activate relationships between the audience and spaces. In Galván’s work, objects serve as catalysts for personal and social transformation.
Her practice includes installation, public art, sculpture, video, drawing, and performance. Gabriela’s work has been exhibited internationally at Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Poland), Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía (Spain), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Germany), and in her native Mexico at Museo Tamayo, Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo de la Ciudad de México (in collaboration with the Centro George Pompidou), Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, among others. Her recent public projects include Aquatic Random at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in New York.
Gabriela has been an artist-in-residence at OMI International Arts Center (New York), the International Studio & Curatorial Program of New York, and the University of Arts in Poznan (Poland). She has received grants from the Jumex Contemporary Art Foundation and the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA) in Mexico, including the Artistic Residencies Program and the Young Creators Program.
