Salvatore Arancio

– Casa Wabi 2017

Community Project

Taller del go “Milky Way Program” – Fundación Casa Wabi
The Italian artist Salvatore Arancio proposed to make a sculpture in a totemic way that included two products that are worked locally in two different communities to unite the entities through the construction of the sculpture. It was decided to make the sculpture using mud from the Agua Zarca community and the coconut from the El Venado community.

In the first sessions, the coconuts were collected, it was explained how the coconut is peeled and the uses of that material in the region. A session was then held to explain how the clay is handled, prepared, and cooked, and the clay plates needed for the sculpture were made. Students from both schools were paired to prepare each group a plaque and work together. Later the sculptures in each school were assembled with the students of each community.

The main interest of the artistic practice of Salvatore Arancio lies in the potential of the images. Particularly in how the images and their meaning can be seen and played with symbols, always with the aim of maintaining a certain ambivalence in their work. This is manifested through the use of a range of media such as ceramics, engraving, collage, animation and video. Arancio gives the sensation of a compact and homogeneous concept, regardless of whether his practice is paradoxically composed of contrasting elements. Each facet of his practice contains an intertwined juxtaposition of the roots and the and representation of images: natural and artificial, mineral and vegetable, scientific and mythological. Departing from their literal meaning, through the use of a range of media such as ceramics, etching, collage, animation and video, Arancio creates new juxtapositions that are both beautifully evocative and deeply disquieting, aiming to create a sort of atlas of confusion.
