Community Project

“The painting as a method of reflecting on the landscape” was an exercise of observation, reflection, and expression carried out by the children of Filomeno Mata Elementary School in San José Manialtepec. Using different techniques and materials, they depicted various scenarios and atmospheres that are part of the imagination of the members of this community and the region.

Cuba

La Habana, 1988

José Gabriel Capaz Suárez (La Habana, Cuba, 1988) is a Cuban artist specializing in painting. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro (2010) and attended the University of the Arts, ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte), in Havana between 2011 and 2015.

He was one of the three members of the collective known as STAINLESS (2010-2017). In 2017, José continued his career solo in Havana. The artist’s work is represented by the Servando Art Gallery in Havana, where he had his first major solo exhibition titled “La extracción” in December 2021. Capaz was awarded in 2022 by the prestigious Vermont Studio Center in Vermont, United States.

During the 11th (2012) and 12th (2015) editions of the Havana Biennial, the artist participated in important public projects. Capaz has held several solo exhibitions in Havana in spaces such as Casa de México and has exhibited collectively at the Freies Museum in Berlin, Berlin; The 8th Floor Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; Robert Miller Gallery, New York; Gare Saint Sauveur in Lille, France, among others. Additionally, he has received grants from the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, New York (2014), and The Rockefeller Brothers Fund, New York (2017). Capaz became part of the collection of the ICA Miami Institute of Contemporary Arts in 2022.
