During the first session, a girl about 11 years old began to tell the story about how her grandfather had planted some orange trees in her homeland, if I remember correctly, in the backyard. She related the presence of these trees with her grandfather’s memory. The tears just came out; nothing could contain them.
His grandfather had recently died. I suppose no one wants to complain in public when he is a teenager, something like that terrified me personally. I proved that our relationship with the natural landscape and what constitutes it (the plants in this case) is not solely based on our survival. It is a useful and vital connection. There is no need for an ancient building in the middle of the sea, the mountain, or the desert to understand that it is the piece of ocean, mountain, or desert that is a form of historical heritage. A heritage that builds and constitutes us.
I have the feeling that after that day, the students buried something nervous and dedicated themselves only to “doing homework.” I guess it’s normal to react like this when you’re 12 years old, and you want the school to end. At least that’s how I felt when I was a child, especially on days when it is very hot. And well, the land was really hot there.
