Afonso Tostes was born in Belo Horizonte, MG. From a young age, he became interested in manual work, inspired by his mother, a teacher who crafted educational materials for public school students. He began his studies at the Guignard School in Belo Horizonte in the mid- 1980s. In the early 1990s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro. In Rio de Janeiro, he attended the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage. His first exhibition took place in 1993 as part of a show featuring students who had completed their studies. Since then, he has exhibited in various locations, including MAM/Rio de Janeiro, CCSP/São Paulo, Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art/Paris, Iberê Foundation/Porto Alegre, Luciana Brito Gallery/São Paulo, among many others. His work can be found in private collections, museums, and cultural centers. His research focuses on the human being and their relationship with the environment. This exploration takes form in drawings, paintings, sculptures, and more.
