Txema Novelo

2017
This exhibition is based on two of the conceptual discourses that drive the work of Txema Novelo: Rock & Roll and mysticism. With a theoretical, literary and aesthetic from icons of the counterculture like William S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Dan Graham, Parmenides García Saldaña or Genesis P. Orridge, Novelo develops a meta religion that through popular culture revisits sacred, gnostic and apocryphal texts of diverse beliefs.

During the residency at Casa Wabi in May 2016, the artist focused on film production, working on a series of video pieces that seek to find a cultural bridge between the Mexican tradition of popular music and the mystical search. "El Rancho Electrónico" takes the title of the song “Tiempo de Híbridos” by Rockdrigo Gonzáles. The artist seeks to recreate a fictional trailer as a western film based on Casa Wabi , casting the staff and residents of the house at that time.

The piece works as the origin of the show and starting point that leads to his continuous investigation of the sigils through the homonymous series of the group song The Velvet Underground, “I will be your mirror”. These sigils were used by ancient practices of magic as graphic elements that made up a group of words in an abstract design. This practice was taken up in modern times as a resource for artistic production and, in this case, they serve as the ideal amalgam for Novelo’s interests. Through photographic paper, video and sculpture, three different
methods of working with these graphic-magical elements are presented in this exhibition.
