¿RECUERDAS LA LUNA AQUEL DÍA?
Danielle Firoozi

The Iranian-American artist Danielle Firoozi (USA, 1988) presents on the Sabino Terrace (Fundación Casa Wabi) a sculpture made of stainless steel and charred wood. Standing four meters tall, the piece invites us to look up at the sky and become aware of the space we inhabit: a terrace that functions more as a window to the sky than as a viewpoint over the city. The inevitable movement of the head as one follows its height forces us to observe what usually goes unnoticed and to position ourselves from another perspective.
Two steel structures, almost identical but arranged at different angles, intersect at the work’s center of gravity. From them emerge points that guide the upward gaze, supporting a circle that resembles a stargazing instrument, through which we could search for the moon—or invite it to look back at us.
Firoozi’s work originates from a creative impulse—in this case, the desire to elevate the gaze—which expands into formal exploration, allowing the materials to guide the process. In this relationship, the work contrasts the shine of the steel with the opacity of the wood, weight with lightness, control with experimentation, emphasizing the expressive possibilities of the materials, playing with their textures, and inviting the viewer to discover the work’s tactile dimension.
Always attentive to the surrounding space, the piece transforms with the constant and cyclical changes of sunlight and moonlight, which become an essential part of its existence. These variations highlight its ephemeral yet eternal nature, reminding us that all matter—as well as the gaze that contemplates it—is in constant motion. The result is a piece that celebrates matter itself: its resilience, fragility, and capacity to speak for itself.
