The Fundación Casa Wabi – Mantarraya (Mexico) prize will be awarded to the director
winner of the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Award for a Debut Film of the 80th Venice Film
Festival, and will consist in a month-and-a-half residency at Casa Wabi (Puerto
Escondido), from August 8 th to September 14 th 2024. The chosen filmmaker will have the
opportunity to develop a project in collaboration with the artists in residence and nearby
communities. The projects are designed to encourage interaction, exchange, and dialogue
across other disciplines and within the community.

Fundación Casa Wabi is a non-profit, civil association thats fosters an exchange between
contemporary art and local communities in three locations: Puerto Escondido, Mexico
City, and Tokyo. Its name originates from the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which
seeks beauty and harmony in the simple, the imperfect and the unconventional. Its mission
is to forge social development through the arts, through the development of five key
programs: residencies, exhibitions, clay, film, and mobile library. The residencies program
seeks to promote three key elements to maintain our mission’s balance: the resident’s
creative inspiration, their relationships to other artists and the Foundation’s team, and the
active exchange with the communities.

The Mantarraya Group, founded in 1998, is one of the most influential film production
companies in Mexico. It works as a platform to support a new generation of filmmakers
and has earned a reputation for promoting new talent, including helping launch careers of
directors Carlos Reygadas and Amat Escalante.
