James Siena (b. 1957, Oceanside, California) works across media exploring the range of possibilities that result when handmade or analog processes are executed with systematic constraints. Siena imposes rules—what he calls visual algorithms—on his practice, which produce concentrated and meticulously rendered abstractions. Celebrated for the brightly colored enamel on aluminum paintings he has produced since the early 1990s, Siena refuses to constrain himself to one medium, producing engravings, etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, as well as drawings executed on typewriters and sculptures. Based in New York, Siena has been featured in more than one hundred solo and group exhibitions since 1981, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial. His work is included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others. Siena was inducted to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000 and was elected an Academician at The National Academy in 2011. His many accolades also include the Eissner Artist of the Year Award from the Cornell Council for the Arts at Cornell University Award (2009); he received his BFA from Cornell in 1979. In 2004 he completed an artist-in-residency program at Yaddo and was later elected to its board of directors. He has been represented by Pace Gallery since 2004.
