Jean Sébastien Grégoire

....

It is empowering to witness a seemingly insignificant seed reveal its visceral beauty.

Plunging your hands in dirt or a wet concrete to find true and innate artistic expression is an experience of liberation, enabling the process of growth and transformation.

Jean Sebastien Grégoire transforms artistic mediums with affection like primary elements nourished by earth and water. It is essential and invigorating for Jean Sébastien Grégoire to convey the result of inner study and to instil a poetic value in his work.

In the studio he opens a dialogue with materials that are often brutal and undesired.
He will question each time his sources of inspiration, What part of his environment does he vividly need to reformat? How can he find a perfect language using nurtured colours and shapes and how can he untangle layers of his personal landscapes?

Recent works of the artist explore the act of “self sabotage”, the restraints that we impose on ourselves, indecisive patterns and constrictive fears, “les liaisons dangereuses”. His practice has evolved into new mediums such as ocean pollution plastic, metal and video.

Jean Sebastien Grégoire captured the eyes of collectors at Arsenal Montreal in 2013 with several large in-situ installations. Since then he has continued to innovate as an emerging talent.

He has been exhibited alongside important modern and contemporary artists in group shows and has had solo exhibitions in Montreal (Arsenal), Berlin (Duve Gallery) and Miami (The M Building). Recently sharing a space with Daniel Buren and with celebrated art Basel exhibition Chambres a Part in Miami.

In 2017, Jean Sebastien Grégoire will exhibit in a series of solo shows starting April in Reykjavik, then moving to Miami, Paris and New York in collaboration with David Altmejd, Ragnar Kjartansson and Addis Gunnarsdottir.
